Description

INTRODUCTION

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have garnered significant attention in the international business literature, reflecting a growing interest in understanding the role of business in addressing these global challenges.  A systematic literature review by Mio et al. (2020) emphasises the strategic role of businesses in addressing the SDGs, highlighting the central role of various business actors beyond large international corporations.  This aligns with the findings of Kolk et al. (2017), who reviewed research in international business journals on key SDGs related to poverty and inequality, energy and climate change, and peace.

The contribution of international business research to the SDGs is evident in the study by Rygh et al. (2021), which highlights the increasing number of IB articles referencing the SDGs, particularly in special issues of prominent journals such as the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) and the Journal of International Business Policy (JIBP).  These journals have significantly contributed to the discourse on the SDGs, covering topics such as SDG interactions (Pradhan et al., 2017; Nilsson et al., 2016), the role of multinational enterprises (Zanten & Tulder, 2018), business sustainability reporting (Rezaee et al., 2023), and the engagement of the private sector with the SDGs (Scheyvens et al., 2016).

Furthermore, the study by Sianes et al. (2022) identifies the main trends in SDG-related academic research, including the most relevant journals, prolific authors, institutions, countries, and collaborative networks.  Yeh et al. (2022) emphasise using bibliometrics to understand the trends and content of SDG-related research papers and identify gaps.  Business model innovation is recognised as a key driver for achieving the SDGs (Rosati et al., 2022), while the study by Ordonez‐Ponce et al. (2021) establishes a positive connection between businesses and the SDGs through community sustainability partnerships.  Moreover, the importance of cross-sectoral collaborations involving governments, businesses, international organisations, academia, and non-profits in achieving the SDGs is highlighted by Bulc et al. (2018).

In summary, the literature on SDGs in international business journals reflects a growing interest in understanding the role of business in addressing the SDGs, identifying trends in SDG-related research, and exploring innovative approaches such as business model innovation and cross-sectoral collaborations to contribute to achieving the SDGs.  This call for chapters aims to build upon this foundation and further advance understanding of the intersection between international business and Sustainable Development Goals.
